‘Shadowhunters’ Season 2 Spoilers & New Promo: Jace In A Tight Situation, Taking A Very Dark Path; Stronger Clary Teased

Season 2 of "Shadowhunters" is going to be grim for Jace (Dominic Sherwood). The Shadowhunter is under the control of Valentine (Alan van Sprang) but his friends will do their best to find him.

The new promo released for "Shadowhunters" Season 2 showcased Maryse Lightwood (Nicola Correia-Damude) telling the Shadowhunters that the Mortal Cup is in the possession of Valentine, who grows stronger by the minute as he plans to create an army. Lightwood also announced the new leader of the New York Institute, Victor Aldertree (Nick Sagar).

One of Victor's most pressing plans in Season 2 of "Shadowhunters" is to locate Jace while the institute is temporarily locked down as a safeguard. Clary (Katherine McNamara), however, asks who would look for Jace if everyone is not allowed to leave the Institute.

Isabelle Lightwood (Emeraude Toubia), however, placated Clary's fears and told her that Jace is a strong man and Valentine won't break him. The "Shadowhunters" Season 2 promo then abruptly showed Jace's face getting punched repeatedly by one of Valentine's minions.

Former "Shadowhunters" showrunner Ed Decter told viewers that they should "be very worried about Jace" in Season 2, TVLine reported. Cassandra Clare's "The Mortal Instruments," which "Shadowhunters" was based on, showcased a grim future for Jace and according to Decter, the show will follow through on its source material. Jace is going to "take a very dark journey."

Clary, meanwhile, will try her best to keep Jace away from succumbing to this dangerous path. On a YouTube Q&A, McNamara said that her and Sherwood's characters will have a role reversal in the upcoming "Shadowhunters" season. Viewers are accustomed to Clary doubting herself and Jace as the self-assured man.

In "Shadowhunters" Season 2, Clary will be the one who's sure of herself and she will transform into "a new kind of Shadowhunter," Just Jared reported. Clary is now ready to take on new challenges as she becomes familiar with the worlds of the Shadowhunters, Downworlders, and Mundanes.

"Shadowhunters" Season 2 will introduce a new character and that's the werewolf Maia (Alisha Wainwright), TVLine reported. Maia is not a fan of violence but her hand will be forced due to Valentine's possession of the Mortal Cup.

It's likely that Maia would have a romantic involvement with the vampire Simon (Alberto Rosende) -- that is, if the show would follow the books. Expect drama from this relationship. After all, pop culture doesn't really feature happy endings for romances between werewolves and vampires.

"Shadowhunters" Season 2 airs on Monday, Jan. 2 at 8/7c on Freeform. Watch the new promo below.
