'Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them' News & Updates: Johnny Depp Joins Cast as Dumbledore's Nemesis In The Harry Potter Franchise

Johnny Depp is confirmed to join the "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" series. The actor will play as Gellert Grindelwald, Albus Dumbledore's greatest friend and nemesis and a pivotal character in the Harry Potter universe.

According to the fan site Leaky Cauldron, director David Yates made the exciting announcement of casting the multi-awarded actor. Fans will see Depp in action on part two of the "Fantastic Beasts" movies. The director also spilled that they have already filmed some scenes and described the experience as amazing and "bonkers."

Depp's character, Grindelwald, is a dark wizard in the "Harry Potter" novels. He is known to be Dumbledore's childhood best friend who would become the Hogwarts headmaster's worst enemy in the future. "Fantastic Beasts 2" will present him at the height of his power, according to Collider. It is not yet known who will play Dumbledore in the film.

In deciding who will play the iconic character, Yates said the production team considered someone who can take the character in an interesting direction. He said they chose Depp because they were looking for an actor who would be a match for Grindelwald's character in an inspired way.

Depp, who brought to life some of Hollywood's most unforgettable roles including Jack Sparrow of the "Pirates of the Carribean" series, is obviously a perfect fit. Yates described him as a genuine artist who is "fearless, ambitious and imaginative."

Depp is also known for his portrayals in films such as "Sleepy Hollow" (1999), "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (2005), and "Alice in Wonderland" (2010).
