What People Need To Know About PTSD And Why Most Veterans Suffer With It

War veterans deserve so much respect and honor after going through a lot just to be a hero of their country. One of the things that they have to suffer is having PTSD, also known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. This disorder is caused by tragic events that often gives a person that particular shock they won't quickly forget in their life. Veterans are often the ones affected by it, but they are not the only people who could experience it.

Anyone who went through a traumatic experience could have PTSD. In an article published by The Huffington Post, they pointed out how people have a wrong idea of individuals who have PTSD. Even newly-elect President Donald Trump called American veterans as weak if they have PTSD. The truth is that it is pretty standard for anyone who has been around gun shooting, bombing, and war to feel afraid in a manner that is more extreme than how people usually react to fear.

Statistics say that there are about 8 million individuals in the United States who suffer from PTSD. 31 percent of these people are war veterans who fought in Vietnam, and 20 percent of them are war veterans who survived the war in Iraq. The remaining are ordinary citizens who have gone and are still going through some traumatic moments in their lives. Even children are affected by this disorder, especially the ones who have experienced domestic violence or who has witnessed violence in their neighborhood. It is an ongoing phenomenon in the U.S., and the number of people suffering from it is unfortunately skyrocketing.

NIMH said that war and traumatic experiences are not the only things that could cause PTSD. A death of a loved on could also be a factor and even losing a job. Anything that deals with emotions and depression could lead to it. Share this article with your loved ones, especially if they are experiencing PTSD.
