Vatican TV Showcases 4K Video Technology For Electing Next Pope?

Three American bishops were promoted by Pope Francis to the cardinal level recently to get ready in the election process for the next pope. The Vatican television center was praised when the news came out. Despite being operated at a minimal range, it has a wide reach when it comes to viewership.

The images from the Vatican City are just so impressive to ignore during the mass with Pope Francis and the new cardinals at St. Peter's Square last Sunday. Production crews can attest that the Vatican is serious to create quality footages with their 12 cameras with two sweeping jibs and long arms. Special moments are choreographed like when the Holy Door was closed. Transmission is also done in the highest-quality possible.

Stefano D'Agostini, head of Vatican TV revealed that they are using for the very first time the 4K HDR. It is brighter, details are enhanced and adjusted at appropriate contrast on the image. Centro Televisivo Vatican (CTV) transmits live shows at 200 events or more annually. Catholic TV stations worldwide broadcast them live plus other stations who may request for it, according to Radio Vaticana.

Representatives from Sony in Japan were present during the debut. Peeking into the Vatican TV's facility behind the St. Peter's Basilica, high-tech, mobile vans for production can be found. It is like a television laboratory because of its humble size which is easier for other production firms to collaborate with.

CTV is manned by 21 employees. Vatican press secretary Greg Burke is proud to say that it might be a tiny set-up for a production house but for sure, quality is not compromised. He was a Fox News correspondent before being on top of the Vatican office, so he should know.

The operation is not cheap, Vatican TV is shooting at a high level with the consideration that their work will be archived, because most people might not be able to see a 4K HDR image quality for home TV viewing for a long time, according to CBS News.
