Blizzard ‘Overwatch’ Wins New Esports Game of the Year Award with “Overwatch League”; Competition Include “Call of Duty,” “FIFA 16”

Blizzard's first-person shooter game "Overwatch" won the New Esports Game of the Year Award from the inaugural Esports Industry Awards. With stiff competition, "Overwatch" outplayed it's the other games that include "Call of Duty: Black Ops III," "FIFA 16," "Street Fighter V," and others.

Qualifications in choosing the winner for the New Esports Game of the Year Award include the game's commercial release date on or before Nov. 24, 2016. Well, clearly Blizzard's "Overwatch" bagged this qualification as the game was released in May 2016.

After only 5 months since its initial release, "Overwatch" had approximately 20 million players in October, with an esports league, a great accomplishment in such as short period of time. Meanwhile, Blizzard has been making huge waves in the esports industry with their experiment in geolocation in esports that may change the face of esports for years to come: "Overwatch League."

According to PVPLive, "Overwatch League" was announced by Blizzard at Blizzcon a few months ago. Polygon reported that in the late 90's and early 2000, Blizzard was one of the game developers to have experienced esports success with "StarCraft."

So, this comes as no surprise if Blizzard rolled out their competitive shooter game "Overwatch." Nate Nanzer, Blizzard Global Director of "Overwatch" esports, told the same publication that there are 3 main pillars used in planning the "Overwatch League": consistency, stability and accessibility.
