RetroEngine Sigma: Here’s a New Retro Console that Could Give the NES Classic Edition a Run for Its Money

A new gaming console that's still in the works is posing a potential challenge to the big hit Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) Classic Edition. The RetroEngine Sigma, which sells for as low as $59 on the crowdfunding site Indiegogo, promises access to more old and classic games than the NES Classic Edition.

The RetroEngine Sigma is about the same size as the NES Classic Edition and can support up to 28 classic gaming consoles, BGR reports. Created by the Santa Monica-based Doyodo Team, the new console also assures users of a smooth gaming experience as it supports both wired and wireless controllers.

According to information from its Indiegogo campaign, the RetroEngine Sigma will have 15 preinstalled games from different well-known brands. The brand names are not yet known.

The RetroEngine Sigma can enable a host of classic gaming systems, including Amstrad, Atari, Game Boy, Game Gear, Super Nintendo, Sega, and PlayStation, among others.

The RetroEngine Sigma will also come with a plug-and-play installer for downloading and configuring new emulators from different sources. In addition, the console allows smartphones to be used as keyboards and game controllers.

Aside from the console itself, a basic RetroEngine Sigma package includes an AC adaptor, dual stick analog controller, retro controller, a micro SD card with 16 gigabytes of capacity, and five other items. Other sets with more features and bigger memories are available at higher prices.

So far, the crowdfunding campaign to make RetroEngine Sigma available has reached $249,430 in pledges, more than the $20,000 its creators targeted.

Many see the RetroEngine Sigma as a good alternative to the NES Classic Edition, which was such a big hit that many stores are struggling to keep up with demand. Limited supplies of the NES also mean those who want it can't necessarily have it immediately.

Will you buy the RetroEngine Sigma instead of the NES Classic Edition?
