‘The OA’ Netflix’s Newest Drama Is Nothing Like 'Stranger Things'

“The OA” is the newest drama series released by Netflix. Season one has eight episodes, and everyone seems to consider the new sci-fi and mythical plot of the show are frustrating.

The plot follows the story of Prairie Johnson, portrayed by Brit Marling who just returned after being missing in action for seven years. She went missing blind, and when she came back, she already can see.

Prairie Johnson came back as The OA and, now, the entire plot revolves around her near-death experiences. “The OA” star could have died a dozen times; however, instead of dying, she has astral travel and speaks with spirits. Her experiences brings the viewers to elegant visuals and creates a stunning spiritual experience, Variety reports.

However, though the visual experiences seem to be great, “The OA” falls short when the viewer tries to deeply understand the story. It focuses on mostly truths and stories, which overlooks the importance of narratives and philosophies.

The show focuses on what happened to Prairie which eventually anchors on faith. The teenagers then give their faith to Prairie. The question now is whether the spiritual experiences of Prairie reflects her entire life now.

It seems to be both a blessing and a curse for Netflix considering that some viewers were expecting to have a “Stranger Things” theme. Instead, what the viewers got is an introspective show that eventually unfolds as a sci-fi show that isn’t that much compelling.

“The OA” seems to be more similar with “Westworld” which is created by HBO. However, it’s still different considering that it still anchors on human stories and family relationships.

There’s also a question of the “unknown,” as the tagline of the show suggest to “trust the unknown,” The Daily Beast reports. So, will the unknown focus on death or life?

Netflix still hasn't announced any details for “The OA” season 2. Do you think the show will be renewed for a new season?
