Shakira Receives Humanitarian Award At World Economic Forum; Colombian Singer Calls For More Early Childhood Education, Nurture Future Leaders

Shakira just received the Humanitarian Award at the World Economic Forum this year and she called for more early childhood education, which is about getting more children in pre-school. The singer also talked about nurturing the future world leaders, which are the youth.

Sioux Land News reported the Colombian singer told the audience at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland that early childhood education should be prioritized. She revealed more about her childhood in Colombia noting that she grew up during the war. Shakira said that if one really wants peace, people need to invest in education.

Reuters also reported Shakira urged the world and business leaders to nurture the future leaders. She said that children, specifically underprivileged kids, should be fed, educated and cared for as she believes that "today's babies will drive tomorrow's business" and that their capacity to contribute will shape tomorrow's societies.

Shakira added the youth will solve the problems of the future. She noted there are still 250 million kids under 5 who are still at risk of being stunted physically and intellectually this 2017.

Shakira, a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, received the Crystal Award in Davos for her humanitarian work. She's also the founder of Pies Descalzos Foundation, which is about working with underprivileged children in Colombia to help them have access to quality education.

Aside from Shakira, a humanitarian award was given to violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. She has an educational foundation that provides scholarships and finances for young musicians.

Actor Forest Whitaker was also given an award. He worked as an advocate for youth empowerment in violent and impoverished areas. Whitaker noted that his charity work in societies needs to have coordination with governments in order for it to flourish. He also noted the importance of grassroots activity.
