'The Walking Dead' Season 7, Episode 1 Review: Are Negan's Choices Really Random?

"The Walking Dead" came back for its season 7 last Oct. 23. After months of waiting for the answers, fans were devastated to finally know who was the victim - or rather victims of vampire bat Lucille.

"The Walking Dead" left off season 6 with the most devious cliffhanger. Everybody was definitely familiar with the sight of bloodied Lucille but not the face of the victim.

However, season 7 of "The Walking Dead" premiered last October 23 and every fan was likely in front of their screens. At last, the show was back. It was both exciting and dreadful moment as fans heard the lines, "Previously on AMC's 'The Walking Dead'."

Hearts were thumping and even to the last minute, speculations were running. Nonetheless, "The Walking Dead" season 6 victim turns out to be Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz). Negan bashed him once in the head, but like the strong and smart-mouthed character he was, he did not back down.

A few may have noticed, the moment before Abraham gets hit by Lucille, he flashed a peace sign to Sasha (Sonequa Martin); it has somehow become their sign. Michael Cudlitz' Abraham was only in the series for a couple of seasons but he has proven to be a great character and until the very end, he proved to be the brave hero he was.

According to Den of Geek, Abraham's death in "The Walking Dead" was heroic. His final words were still an act of defiance.

Nonetheless, some "TWD" fans may not have seen it, but there was a second death. After Daryl (Norman Reedus) hits Negan, the latter punishes another member of Rick's group. This time, it was Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun).

Glenn's death was more "close up" and showed the brutality of what Negan could do. His last words were directed to his wife, Maggie (Lauren Cohan) who was pregnant with the uncertainty of their baby's survival.

In the end, two of these deaths plus a close call to Rick cutting Carl's (Chandler Riggs) arm made Rick bow down to Negan.

"The Walking Dead" fandom was definitely in despair with the death of "family" members. But what made the premiere episode as memorable as any others?

A show like "The Walking Dead" has already shown several deaths of main characters that fans love. However, the first episode of "TWD" season 7 was something more than terrifying. It was heartbreaking and gut wrenching.

Technically, what made everything works in "The Walking Dead's" premiere episode was definitely how every single actor brought their A-game. Fans were not thinking of Steven Yeun and Michael Cudlitz. For fans, they were simply Glenn and Abraham in "TWD".

The despair of every member was very real. Andrew Lincoln's performance in the recent "TWD" episode was exceptional. Jeffrey Dean Morgan was every bit the evil Negan that most "The Walking Dead" fans now hate.

Apart from that, "TWD's" graphics were grotesque. The brutality of the kills was enough to make fans sick; not simply because it was hard to watch bits or brains, flesh and blood. It was hard to watch because the brutal death happened to one of the crowd favorite characters in "The Walking Dead" series.

Lastly, the seemingly endless taunts and teases of "The Walking Dead" without showing who died worked. Everyone was not prepared. It hit every single fan just like how it hit every character. They were in the same moment as with Rick and his group.

Nonetheless, a question still lies somewhere in the first episode. Was Negan's choices really random?

It is possible that Negan has already heard of Rick and his crew. If he were to get them to provide for him, he might have to know who they were and what they do. It is likely he has a profile of each member of Rick's group.

He needs to incapacitate Rick if he wants to make sure they follow. A rebellion may happen, especially if he knows Rick and how they do things. The choices for the kills benefits Negan, not just merely for fun.

Abraham is likely the second best if not the best warrior Rick's group has. If he stays, he can help Rick fight them. He can be his right hand. Sure enough, Negan knows about the importance of right-hand members.

Glenn was also a necessary kill in Negan's viewpoint. He was another strong member of the group and a smart one. When he has no reason to kill another, he takes Daryl away from Rick's group; ultimately making him feel like his group's lives are at his hands. With strong characters gone. It would be hard for Rick to get back up easily.

So, what will happen to them now that Negan is ruling in "The Walking Dead?" Who will die next in "TWD?" Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
