'Sherlock' Season 4: Benedict Cumberbatch Confirms No Tom Hiddleston [Air Date, Spoilers, Trailer & News]

It has long been rumored that "Sherlock" Season 4 starring Benedict Cumberbatch would have Tom Hiddleston as special guest. But in a recent interview, the star of "Doctor Strange" confirmed that the "Thor" actor will not be in the series.

Benedict Cumberbatch admitted that he has not worked with Tom Hiddleston in the BBC series. Whatever started the rumor regarding "Sherlock" Season 4 supposedly had no basis and Benedict Cumberbatch is sorry that fans of the show were hooked into it, Radio Times reports.

It was a photo of Tom Hiddleston with "Sherlock" co-creator and actor Mark Gatiss (Mycroft Holmes) and actress Amanda Abbington (Mary Watson) that caused quite the stir. Then in July, BBC Store added fuel to the rumors when it released a photo of #HiddleBatch that suggested Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston do look like brothers, the Independent reports.

But Benedict Cumberbatch said that fans of "Sherlock" have enough to figure out Season 4 from the clues that came out during Comic-Con in San Diego, which also happened last July. "Sherlock" creators usually hint about the plot by releasing three words before every season, and they did so at the event.

For this season, the words are "Thatcher," "Smith" and "Sherrinford." These have been speculated to refer to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, "Sherlock" villain Culverton Smith from the Arthur Conan Doyle short story, "The Adventures of the Dying Detective," and a third brother named Sherrinford, Screen Prism reports.

Thatcher has been made a point of reference in previous "Sherlock" seasons. It's still unclear if the third brother is also just a point of reference in "Sherlock" Season 4, or if there is an actual presence with the actor casting remaining a mystery. Meanwhile, Toby Jones has been picked to play Culverton Smith in the upcoming season last June, as Parent Herald previously reported.

BBC announced that "Sherlock" Season 4 returns to the small screen on Jan. 1, 2017 and it will feature a character who has been dead -- Moriarty (Andrew Scott). It is believed that this will be the final run for the series. Check out the teaser to "Sherlock" in the video below.
