'Sherlock' Season 4 Air Date, News & Update: Benedict Cumberbatch Series Travels To Past? Holmes’ Origin Story In S4?

"Sherlock Season 4" from the BBC, with stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman (Dr. John Watson), will dig into the roots of Sherlock Holmes. As the final season before "Sherlock" goes on an anticipated hiatus, Season 4 will bring big revelations on Sherlock Holmes.

While Benedict Cumberbatch took the small screen by storm as the youngest Sherlock Holmes to portray the original character by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, tie-ups to the canon were mostly hints. The Huffington Post reports that "Sherlock Season 4" will bring out more of the history of Sherlock Holmes.

 Benedict Cumberbatch revealed that when he first joined the BBC series, co-creator and co-writer Steven Moffat did not give the "Sherlock" star much backstory on his character. This he said is one of the difficulties in playing Sherlock Holmes.

According to Benedict Cumberbatch, the "Sherlock Season 4" star felt much like an imposter. Primarily because his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes had mostly been guesswork. "I think the worst is when I played violin as Sherlock - a skill that takes years of childhood and adolescent practice time," Benedict Cumberbatch said.

Benedict Cumberbatch acknowledges that for the most part of his guesswork seems to be effective. Still seeing as Sherlock Holmes is unique in many ways, understanding Sherlock Holmes' backstory would have given Benedict Cumberbatch a stronger direction in his scenes.

Despite misgivings by Benedict Cumberbatch, the "Sherlock" star's performance is hailed as one of the best portrayals of Sherlock Holmes. Hence when speculations came out that the BBC series will end at Season 4 or that Benedict Cumberbatch may be replaced as Sherlock Holmes, fans were concerned.

As Parent Herald cites, Benedict Cumberbatch expressed that "Sherlock Season 4" may be followed by a break, which in no way necessarily means cancellation. Co-writer and co-creator Mark Gatiss (Mycroft Holmes) similarly assured that Benedict Cumberbatch will continue to be the star in "Sherlock Season 5."
