Type 2 Diabetes UPDATE: Ways to Prevent Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes is a common form of diabetes capable of harming many organs of the body. Unlike Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes is largely preventable, and there are some ways available to avoid the disease.

According to Health Line, diabetes afflicts 29.1 million Americans with 8.1 million of them unaware that they are already afflicted with the disease. The risk factors for type 2 diabetes are plenty, and they include lifestyle decisions especially for those whose diet include a lot of sugar.

Losing weight is one way of preventing Type 2 diabetes, and is known to lower the risk by more than 50 percent, that is if they lose about 7 percent of body weight by exercise and other physical activities. To lose weight, one would also need to watch their diet.

A healthy and balanced diet is to be maintained to prevent Type 2 diabetes. It does not only help people lose weight to gain a stable body mass index, but it also monitors intake by replacing refined carbohydrates (such as sugar -- usually found in white rice and other sweet foods and beverages which are the leading cause diabetes) with complex carbohydrates such as grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes.

The American Diabetes Association also indicates that there is a correlation between stress and diabetes as the former affects people's way of eating and could even possibly raise blood sugar levels. People feeling stressed need to learn how to relax and engaging in certain activities such as sports, hobbies or having a massage could help lower stress levels and lessen the risk of having Type 2 diabetes.

Although Type 2 diabetes has treatments available as opposed to the autoimmune Type 1 diabetes, prevention is still better than cure. It is better to prevent one's self from diabetes as the disease could lead to a lot of organ complications which can become much more problematic due to its unpredictable nature.
