'Black Mirror' Spinoff News & Updates: Will Season 3's Most Popular Episode 'San Junipero' Become Its Own Show?

"Black Mirror" Season 3's "San Junipero" episode on Netflix received praises from viewers. Starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Mackenzie Davis, the episode has been listed by critics as its best among the six released on Netflix last Friday, Oct. 21.

"Black Mirror" Season 3's "San Junipero" also emerged as its most popular episode, earning a 93 percent vote on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.9/10 vote on IMDb. Thus, it didn't come as a surprise when a potential spinoff has been suggested. But will "San Junipero" become its own show?

"Black Mirror" Season 3 "San Junipero" episode director Owen Harris told The Hollywood Reporter that a spinoff sequel would be fun to do and he would love the idea. "There's probably lots of ground you could cover by that or a parallel San Junipero, wherever that might be," he told the news outlet.

But exciting as it sounds, he knows that toying with a "Black Mirror" spinoff would be up to him. "You have to remember that if there is a sequel, Charlie Brooker will be writing it," he said.

Owen Harris is referring to the fact that Charlie Brooker, the creator of "Black Mirror" since it started its run on U.K television in 2011, usually delves on dark themes. "San Junipero" stood out because it had a happy ending, one that Charlie Brooker doesn't always deliver. "Charlie Brooker might not want to do two happy endings," the director said.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Kelly) and Mackenzie Davis (Yorkie) meets in a disco bar in the '80s in "Black Mirror" Season 3 "San Junipero." They grow close and develop a same-sex relationship. But as with any "Black Mirror" episodes, the twist is that San Junipero only exists in their minds. Kelly and Yorkie are both old people who are relieving their youth in this happy place with technology that alters their brains.

When Yorkie dies ahead of Kelly in "Black Mirror" Season 3 "San Junipero," she decides to let her memories live in this happy place and Kelly followed her when it was her time. Everything in San Junipero is actually housed in a database manned by robots in what seems like a futuristic retirement home. Vox provides a complete recap to the episode.

Since its release, fans of "Black Mirror" haven't stopped talking about "San Junipero" and theories continue to develop online. The most popular episode of "Black Mirror" even spawned a track list on Spotify and several iterations on YouTube.

It's still uncertain where this spinoff plans could lead since "Black Mirror" Season 4 is already being developed. The show is told as an anthology series, meaning every episode is a different story with a different cast.
