6 and 7-year-old Brothers Die in Crash While Driving Family Car

Brothers from Missouri, one six years old and the other seven, die in a car crash, Friday afternoon.

The seven-year-old was driving their grandmother's car when the accident happened.

They took the keys to the 2007 Buick LaCrosse of the family and drove off the fields then reached the county road in the east area of Kansas City, Missouri.

The investigation on the death of the brothers

According to reports from the Missouri Highway Patrol, the car was traveling at high speed when the driver lost control of the vehicle. It went airborne twice before hitting a tree and landing on its top. The car also caught fire after the incident.

The spokesman for the Missouri Highway Patrol, Sgt. Andy Bell, said that the speed could be a contributor to why the car flipped.

The brothers were pronounced dead on the spot at around four in the afternoon on Friday.

Investigation reveals that both of the brothers were not wearing seatbelts.

The Highway Patrol, together with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, is continuing their investigation on the incident. One of the significant matters that the two offices would like to know is how the brother took possession of the family car.

Police Reminders to Parents

In previous incidents where children, as young as five years old, are caught driving their parents' car, authorities have been reminding parents about the safety of kids on the road.

One reminder from the police is to ensure that car keys are not accessible to children. To begin with, they cannot start the car without one.

Educating children about the importance of road safety is also essential. They should be taught that there are reasons why children are not allowed to drive. Kids should learn that when the appropriate age comes, they will have the privilege to safely take on the road.
