Is kojic acid a safe skin lightening during pregnancy?

Kojic acid is one of the safest skin brighteners that slows down melanin production. The pigment that gives your skin, hair, and eyes color is called melanin. Tyrosine, an amino acid, helps your body produce melanin. 

What kojic acid does is that it prevents tyrosine from forming by blocking it. When you have less melanin, you get a lighter skin tone.

Soy

Joshua Zeichner, M.D., Mount Sinai Medical Center assistant professor of dermatology, explained how it does. He said that soy keeps fibroblasts that form collagen working, leaving your skin more youthful. Do take note that soy could sometimes worsen skin color if you have melasma or dark skin. 

Glycolic acid

Get clear skin with glycolic acid. Apart from removing excessive oil on your skin, it also exfoliates dead skin cells. It also wounds the skin in minute size so your skin would cause collagen to produce. 

When you go to a dermatologist, you could have a concentration of 40 percent glycolic acid with peeling. You could also do it at home, but products available in the market have a lower percentage of the active ingredient. Make sure to apply sunscreen as whitening agents cause your skin to be more sensitive to the sun.

Vitamin C

Dr. Zeichner said that vitamin C is one of his go-to recommendations for expecting moms because it protects cells from damage by fighting off free radicals. A study proves that vitamin C is essential for collagen production.
