Dermatologist Christiane Gonzaga said that one great homemade product to lighten your skin is rice water. She noted that a lightening substance called kojic acid that is present in many whitening lotions comes from rice.

You could easily make one at home. As a bonus, there are no contraindications because rice is considered a natural antiseptic. Other than that, a small concentration of it acts as clearing agents.

What you need

  • A cup of rice
  • Filtered water
  • A bowl
  • A strainer 

Procedure

  1. Wash the rice to remove its impurities. 
  2. Put the rice in a bowl then fill it with water. 
  3. Cover the bowl, then let it sit for 30 minutes to one hour. 
  4. Strain the rice and keep the water for use. Soak a cotton pad or cotton ball then apply the water onto your skin for the lightening effect. 

Gonzaga said that you may cook the grains you have used. One tip that Gonzaga shares is that you may put the rice water in the fridge. The cold rice water is more refreshing, plus, you could preserve its nutrients for longer. You could keep the water and use it for up to two days.

To maximize the benefits of rice water, it is essential to use it every day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Gonzaga reminds people to make sure to wash face thoroughly before applying the rice water to remove all impurities first. 

Gonzaga said that rice water helps lighten the skin and reduces skin inflammations. She also said that it has a calming and refreshing effect on your skin. However, she also noted that it should not be used to replace any treatment with appropriate substances in the right concentrations.
