Ohio Mom Determined to Walk Again After "Critical Accident"

An Ohio mom is determined to walk again after a "critical accident." She became almost paralyzed after falling down the stairs. On October 4, Lauren Shmalo Berg sustained neck and spine trauma after falling down a flight of stairs. Erica Cohen-Biscotti and Cyvia Star, her best friends, started a GoFundMe page for me and shared the bad experience there.

An eight-hour surgery

They wrote that before they moved Berg to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, she received CPR. She underwent eight hours of surgery, then stayed in the intensive care unit of the hospital after.

Rob Shmalo, Berg's brother, posted on his Facebook update about her condition. He said that his sister had two broken vertebrae in her neck because of the accident. Then he said that it had caused her arms and legs to become partially paralyzed.

Believes she could walk again

On October 10, Rob wrote that while Berg has been unable to feel her arms and legs, they believe that she, too, can beat it if anyone can. He also stated that Berg told them that she would walk again during her darkest moment. He noted that his sister is both fierce and kind at the same time.

The mom of two has continued to make progress, which shows her being a fighter. On October 12, Rob announced that his sister is "getting stronger day by day." He also said that his sister is "starting to feel sensations."

Starting her rehab

Rob said that they officially transferred Berg to Daniel Drake Rehabilitation Center in Cincinnati after three days. There, Berg was earnestly preparing to begin her rehab. He wrote that the collective love, generosity, light, and prayers had helped his sister.

The Ohio mom's best friends also wrote on the fundraiser that the rehab would help her regain her arms' and legs' feeling and functionality. Berg's loved ones continue to spread the word about the fundraiser. Apart from that, they also keep rallying around her as she continues to fight.

After the launch of the GoFundMe on October 10, it has already raised $165,000 as of writing. Cohen-Biscotti and Star are hoping to help support her husband, Justin, and two young kids, a two-year-old daughter, Lia, and a three-month-old son, Isaac.

The page reads that Berg is not only a force for everyone but is also a guiding light to the people around her. It also reads that the mom of two is empathic and dynamic, concluding that she is a survivor.

Her best friends also noted that her health care, child care, and other costs would need a large amount of money. They also wrote that Berg has always been a cheerleader to many, so they are hoping people could give back to her.
