Whatever it is that you associate Christmas with, whether it is with the birth of Christ, of a time that should bring in good cheer as well as everyone's angels, Christmas, as we can all agree is the season with the spirit of love and with the essence of giving.

If you are a parent and you want to know how to teach children the essence of giving not only this coming Christmas, here are some ways that can help you.

Zooming out to look at the bigger picture

One way on how to teach children the essence of giving is by teaching them to zoom out. Zoom out or pull back so they can get the big picture of what other people within the community, country, and the world are going through.

As they see through each person's situations, ask them what they can do to help or what you can do as a family to help. Invite them to chip in as much as they can. This will surely knack some essence of giving within them.

Zoom in to see what is needed nearby

Zooming in to see what needs are near at hand can also be a way to know how to teach children the essence of giving. Is there a sibling that needs and would appreciate more patience and kindness?

How about asking the parents if they needed help with something? How about also asking your neighbors if they need help with their groceries or help with shoveling their sidewalk?

Making family traditions that will show and promote the essence of giving and other acts of kindness

One important way on how to teach children the essence of giving is by showing them how it is done.

After all, children learn more when they see people who are doing the same thing. Be your kids' role models and make family traditions that will promote helping other people and showing them other acts of kindness. Such traditions can be from simply giving letters or presents to each family member. In that way, everyone both gives and receives.

Help the homeless

During the Christmas season, most people are busy buying gifts and ordering foods for their family dinners to be held in the comfort of their homes.

Whether you admit it or not, not everyone has the same privilege. So, one way to learn how to teach children the essence of giving is by inspiring them to give some cash or a meal to that homeless person that they see standing in the cold in the streets.

You can even stop and talk with them for a bit. After all, they are people, and they just wanted to feel like one.

Say thank you

If the Christmas season is Jesus' birthday for you and your family, before opening your gifts, say a family prayer of thanks like thanking Jesus for loving your family enough and ask Him to help your family remember that you give gifts to each other today for the same reason as an expression of your love to one another.
