Chelsea Clinton Reveals Breastfeeding, Working Mom Challenges; Says 'Balancing Was Really Hard'

Chelsea Clinton grew up with all the perks that came with being a daughter of the former president of the United States. But now that she's a lot older and raising a family of her own, the 35-year-old said there are indeed several challenges to becoming a mom.

"I think the one thing that I did find challenging was when I went back to work full-time," Chelsea told E! Online. "I still was breastfeeding and I was pumping and I was so committed to insuring I could keep doing that for Charlotte, and balancing those logistics was really hard."

The new mom gave birth to daughter Charlotte September of last year and said that like many other mothers, she was at a loss in the beginning. "I wish that there'd sort of been a guidebook on how do you think about this, really, how do you make this work?" she told Maria Menounos in the E! interview. She said that figuring it out took some time, and she also had to learn to become comfortable pumping in public places in order to feed her baby.

Chelsea also shared that her one-year-old is already beginning to talk. "Her first word was 'up,' which I think is really pretty cool And then 'hi' and 'bye,' and 'dadda' did come before 'mamma,' but thankfully 'mamma' came before 'Elmo.'"

Recently, Chelsea and her husband Marc Mezvinsky marked their daughter's first birthday which involved, "lots of balloons ... lots of bubbles and lots of books," according to Huffington Post. The family celebrated the baby's birthday at Apple Seeds, a children's playground in New York, People reported.

After the birthday, Chelsea shared a rare photo of her and her daughter on social media as they read a book together. "Last book for Charlotte before bedtime on her first birthday! Marc & I are so grateful every day to be her parents," Chelsea wrote on her Facebook account.

The former White House resident isn't one to habitually post pics of Charlotte on her public social media account, but Chelsea said that it may all change. "I have no doubt that, at some point, I might succumb to the 'this is such a cute moment that I feel the need to share it more broadly' impulse," she told People.
