The Rising Trend of Maternity Fashion

For years, expecting mothers would be resigned to the fact that they couldn't dress up or look stylish now that they were pregnant. Many soon-to-be and new mothers are now re-evaluating their relationship with maternity fashion, looking for trendy and comfortable clothes that suit their evolving bodies.

A Historical Point of View

Society has been shaming women on practically all matters of their life. Pregnancy used to be a scandalous event, with women being told to hide their baby bumps and avoid going out in the last few months. Visibly pregnant women remained severely underrepresented in films or television. Those actresses who would be pregnant would be scrambling for ways to hide their bumps, wearing loose shirts and appearing only from specific camera angles.

Revolution of Maternity Fashion

The new trend in fashion is now to flaunt your baby bump rather than concealing it. Expecting female celebrities now announce their pregnancies through glamorous photoshoots highlighting their belly. This transparency is being praised for empowering pregnant women everywhere, teaching them to embrace their new body rather than hiding it.

Now perceived as the pioneer of the bare baby bump looks, Rihanna stuck to her bold, edgy fashion aesthetic. She used her pregnancy to enhance her risque looks rather than taking them down. It's safe to say the entire internet swooned after each Rihanna look, whether it was fishnets or a see-through dress covered in rhinestones.

What to Wear?

To start, a cute crop top is a simple and accessible piece of clothing that can show off your baby bump. This can be achieved through redesigning most of the articles in your wardrobe. You could DIY any shirt in your closet into a crop top or knot it to the side. A more casual yet classy look can be achieved by tying a button-down shirt. A button up could also be worn as is, leaving the bottom buttons open for an unbuttoned and unbothered look. These can be paired with practically anything - a maxi skirt, trousers, or even low-rise jeans. Low-rise jeans are making a comeback and are the perfect bottom to your statement-making pregnancy outfit.

Whether chic, floral maxi or fitted-turtleneck mini, dresses are a pregnant woman's best friend. They're light, stylish, and, most importantly, comfortable. To spin it, you can take a page from Rihanna's book and go for mesh dresses that are great for putting your baby bump on display. Cut-out dresses have always been used to make a statement and never go out of style, with red carpets always having a few. A cut-out dress that works well with your bump is fun, dramatic, and high fashion.

The most important part of choosing your look is wearing whatever pleases you. Pregnancy is a lengthy, strenuous nine months so comfort should be your number one priority.

Endnote

It's safe to say that the maternity clothes market is undergoing a drastic transformation. The market for maternity apparel clothes has expanded exponentially and is expected to be worth almost $25 billion globally by 2028. No matter whether you want to retain a modest look or flaunt your bump, you'll find something that suits you. Brands like Dainty Jewells are on the rise, targeting expecting mothers and producing trendy maternity wear.

To all expecting or new moms out there, embrace your individualistic style throughout pregnancy, and don't be afraid to experiment with your looks.
