Mother of 17-Year-Old Killed by French Police Blames Officer as Fresh Violence Erupts, Hundreds Arrested

The tragic death of a 17-year-old boy, Nahel, at the hands of French police has ignited three consecutive nights of destructive unrest, reigniting a heated debate about discrimination and policing in low-income, multi-ethnic communities. Amidst the escalating violence, Nahel's mother has singled out the officer who shot her son as the sole person responsible for his death.

According to CNN, the incident took place during a traffic stop in the Paris suburb of Nanterre, where bystander footage captured the fatal encounter. In the video, two officers were seen standing on the driver's side of the car, with one officer firing his weapon at the driver despite no apparent immediate threat.

Nanterre prosecutor Pascal Prache revealed that the officer claimed to have fired out of fear that Nahel might run someone over with the car. However, it is believed that the officer's use of the weapon was unlawful. Consequently, he is currently under investigation for voluntary homicide and has been placed in preliminary detention.

In an emotional interview with France 5, Nahel's mother, Mounia, expressed her grief and pointedly assigned blame solely to the officer who took her son's life. She made it clear that she did not hold the entire police force accountable for the tragedy.

Despite calls for patience and allowing the justice system to take its course, a significant number of people across France, particularly young individuals of color who have experienced discrimination by the police, remain shocked and angry. This anger has manifested itself in three consecutive nights of violent protests throughout the country.

In response to the unrest, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announced the deployment of 45,000 policemen across France, along with additional special units, armored vehicles, and helicopters. Overnight violence on Thursday resulted in 917 people being detained, including 13 children. However, the minister emphasized that the death of Nahel should not justify disorder and delinquency.

The aftermath of the protests is visible in the charred streets and graffiti-covered walls of Nanterre. Over 200 government buildings were vandalized during the violent episodes. In response, large-scale events across France have been banned, and a nationwide shutdown of bus and tram services was ordered for Friday evening.

President Emmanuel Macron has held crisis meetings in an effort to prevent a repeat of the 2005 riots sparked by similar incidents. Macron urged calm and called for parents to take responsibility for their children's actions. The president emphasized that the violence targeting public buildings was unacceptable and unjustifiable.

The death of Nahel has brought the issue of institutional racism to the forefront, with demands for police reform and the potential abolition of a 2017 law granting police more latitude in using firearms. The government faces the challenge of addressing allegations of discrimination while upholding its commitment to French Republicanism, which aims to ensure equality by removing markers of difference.
