Chinese Baby Rescued from Sewage Pipe Returned To Family

A Chinese baby, who after birth got stuck in a sewage pipe in a communal toilet in Zhejiang on Saturday, was released in to his mother's custody late Wednesday.

On Saturday the 22-year-old mother raised an alarm about the baby when he got stuck in a pipe below the squat toilet, without revealing that she was the mother.

According to the police authorities, the woman cleaned the toilet room of any signs of fresh births and did not immediately come forward as the mother,  reported the Associated Press. However, two days later she confessed to being the baby's mother after police found toys and blood-stained tissues in her home.

The authorities declared the case as an "accident. ""It has been defined as an accident," the police officer at the Punan station in Zhejiang's Pujiang county, told the DPA news agency.

According to the local media reports, the woman became pregnant after a one-night stand. Associated Press reported that she told the police that she did not have money to abort the child and her father refused to help her. So, she had to keep her pregnancy a secret.

Police tracked down a man, supposed to be the baby's father. He said he would support the baby.

Firefighters found the newborn trapped in an L-shaped section of the sewage pipe. It took nearly two hours to remove the baby from the pipe. The baby weighed 6 pounds and 3 ounces and showed a low heart rate and minor bruises on head and limbs, but was mostly safe, according to local reports.
