Baby Fur Seal's Emaciated Body Found In San Francisco Bay Area Park

A baby fur seal was found in a business park in the San Francisco Bay Area after he escaped from the water. This was the second escape that this tagged baby fur seal has attempted.

Pipester, the name given by the Marine Mammal Center located in Sausalito to the baby fur seal, was found by an unknown individual in the bushes of a business park last Wednesday at around 6 a.m. The baby fur seal had to cross Interstate 880 in order to have reached the business park.

Police who received the call initially thought that the caller might have mistaken the seal for a possum or another furry animal. However, upon verifying the call, they went to the scene and immediately took action upon seeing the baby seal's emaciated body.

In a report by Yahoo News, the spokeswoman for the Marine Mammal Center, Laura Sherr, said that Pipester has been in their care before when he was rescued by volunteers at the Moss Landing Harbor. The recent event was the second escape of the little fellow.

The San Francisco Bay Area incident is just one of the many instances where a baby seal has escaped from water and inadvertently got trapped in a particular city area. The Huffington Post has previously reported on a stranded 5-day old seal pup that was initially found by some cows in Lincolnshire, U.K.

In the Lincolnshire incident, the seal swam inland when the tides rose and eventually became trapped in the marsh when the tides ebbed. Sixty-seven year old Ellis found the pup and contacted the Skegness Natureland Seal Sanctuary (SNSS). The sanctuary eventually got hold of the pup and took care of it.

As for Pipester, he's already recovering from dehydration and malnutrition. The Marine Mammal Center is properly taking good care of him.
