Woman Gives Birth to Baby at Pennsylvania Station

A woman passenger delivered a baby at Pennsylvania station, New York, with the help of Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) officials and paramedics, Thursday.

The 32-year-old mother Ana Aguirre went into labor when she was waiting for the Long Island Railroad train at Penn station, early Wednesday. "When I was returning, the pain got much worse," she said. "I had already bought the train ticket and was waiting for the train. Then the pain got stronger," she told the New York Daily News.

Metropolitan officers on duty responded to a call about a woman in pain.  Earlier that day, another passenger had needed medical help, hence there were already two paramedics present at the station. The officers found Aguirre in the district waiting room. "She was doubled over in pain," said police officer Melissa DeFrancesco.

They then took her to a private office and Aguirre was assisted by Emergency Medical Services workers. "We had another call and when we returned-it was only 10-15 minutes later-she had had the baby," the MTA officers said. Yahoo! Shine reported that the baby was born at 10:04 am and weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces.

However, there were only two EMS workers and they needed help so the MTA officers took care of the baby. "They were looking for some more help. They handed me the baby, and I took care of him while they helped the mom," DeFrancesco said.

Later, Aguirre was taken by paramedics on a stretcher to an ambulance and the baby was wrapped in a blue blanket by DeFrancesco. The sight of the newborn delighted the passengers at the station.

"Like any day at Penn Station, it was quite busy," said DeFrancesco. "But with the baby being born it was pretty exciting. A little chaotic, but we all did what we had to do."

Aguirre is already a mother of an 11-year-old daughter and two sons aged six and four, the MTA informed.

Earlier this week, a 23-year-old woman gave birth to a baby boy at L'Enfant Plaza Station in Washington, D.C. According to Fox News, the baby was delivered with the help of an off-duty medical technician and the baby's family was gifted a $100 Metro gift card.
