Woman Gives Birth to 13 Pounds Baby Naturally

A British woman gave birth to a baby weighing 13lbs 11oz (6.2kg) vaginally in Spain, Wednesday.

The mother, 40-year-old, Maxime Marin gave birth to the baby at the Hospital Marina Salud in Denia, Alicante. She was accompanied by her Colombian partner with whom she lives in Spain.

According to the hospital authorities, both the mother and baby are in "perfect health." The baby's weight is twice than that of an average infant. They also said that the delivery was "uncomplicated" even though the baby was big.

The parents named their baby Maria Lorena. Marin said that she knew the baby would be big but not "that big".

"In my 40-year professional career I have never known of any case of a birth with this weight by natural childbirth. We are all very satisfied with the work we carried out," said Javier Rius, the head of the hospital's department of obstetrics and gynaecology.

Head of the paediatrics, Hector Boix said that they assessed the possible complications in the baby. "These babies need to be monitored the first few hours because of lowered blood sugar levels," he said. "They are very passive and will not even wake up to take in food."

The mother was in labor for five hours and did not even need an epidural. Marin is also mother to three other children. They all were big babies.

In 1979, a woman gave birth to the biggest baby so far that weighed 23lb 2oz  in Canada. But the baby died 11 hours after birth.
