Kindergarten Benefits: Top 5 Things Children Learn In Kindergarten

Are you still trying to decide whether to enroll your child in a kindergarten or not? Learning the different kindergarten benefits might help you make a decision.

Yahoo Parenting gathered a list of nine things that children learn in kindergarten. The ultimate goal of kindergarten is to help kids prepare early for college and their careers.

1. Alphabet

Kindergarten helps kids learn to recite their ABCs.  Recognizing the uppercase lowercase fonts as well as learning the long and short vowel sounds are also taught during kindergarten.

2. Reading And Rhyming Skills

The foundation for a child's reading skills and comprehension is also being built in kindergarten. Learning how to answer questions about a book or short story is important during this period. Kindergarten can also help kids develop their rhyming skills.

3. Writing Letters And Names

Kids need to learn how to write most if not all of the lowercase and uppercase letters before they start first grade. "Take it one step further, and kids should be able to write their own names and other short, consonant-vowel-consonant words," the article shared. "Great Schools also notes that kids should "phonetically or inventively spell simple high-frequency words they often see or hear (e.g. the, go, she, like, play)."

4. Simple Addition

Adding two numbers that add up to a maximum total of 10 is also going to be taught in kindergarten. Using drawings, fingers and objects to learn addition might be utilized in teaching kindergarten students.

5. Shapes in the Environment

Learning the different shapes in the environment is also one of the kindergarten benefits. SCHOLASTIC explained the importance of learning shapes. "When your child explores different shapes, she is using one of the most basic educational processes: the observation of same and different. This concept provides her with a basic process that she will be able to use in observing, comparing and discussing all she sees and encounters."

Kindergarten is fun -- worth every investment. Know that your kids will surely enjoy each class as he or she learns new things and meet new friends.
