How To Control And Prevent Ticks On Dogs

Ticks might be tiny creatures but they can cause many health problems for dogs. Learning how to control and prevent ticks on dogs is a must for pet owners.

DFS shared some of the most effective tick control and prevention methods. These tips are essential for the health and well-being of your lovely dog.

1. Tick control in the environment

A spray that contains fenvalerate can be used every one to two weeks during peak months for ticks. Removing leaves, brush and tall grass around your house can also reduce the number of ticks in your surroundings. For indoors, a flea and tick fogger is recommended.

2. Tick control topical

Tick control products are available for dogs such as sprays, powders, dips, shampoos and collars. The once-a-month topical for ticks applied on the back of a dog is the easiest to use and the most long-lasting.

3. Tick control spray

Sprays that contain permethrin or pyrethrin are ideal for dogs. Just make sure not to spray the liquid on the dog's eyes. Permethrin can also kill lice and mice, according to Medline Plus.

4. Tick control powder

If you decide to use powders, make sure to do so in places with good ventilation to avoid inhalation of the powder. Powders for tick prevention usually contain pyrethrin.

5. Tick control shampoo

You can also use a flea and tick shampoo for your pet dog. "To properly use a flea and tick shampoo you must be sure to work the shampoo in over the entire body and then leave it on at least 10 minutes before you rinse it off," the article shared.

6. Tick control collar

Flea and tick collars are also effective methods in preventing ticks on your dogs. Just make sure not to get the collar wet because it will lose its effectiveness.

Always remember that ticks can cause dogs different health conditions such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and blood loss.

And now that you have learned how to control and prevent ticks on dogs, you can try them out and choose what is best for you.
