Bedwetting Solutions: How To Stop Bedwetting In 5 Ways

The American Academy of Pediatrics states that 20% of 5-year-olds and 10% of 6-year-olds are bedwetters. There is really nothing serious when your child is a bedwetter. Hence, the sleepover is not that easy.

Parenting and WebMD share the following ways on how to stop and ease your child from bedwetting:

1. Provide urinary bed alarms.

Most experts say that the most effective bedwetting treatment is a urinary bed alarm that is worn on the pajamas or underwear of the child. It is connected to an alarm box that is worn on the shirt. Its sensor detects the moisture and alarms right away. This alerts the child to get up and urinate in the bathroom.

2. Converse with your child.

Explain to your child that bedwetting is kind of normal so he won't be embarrassed or ashamed. Let him know that it's not his fault. Do not scold him whenever he urinates on the bed because this might affect his self-esteem -- eventually easing your problem on bedwetting.

3. Reward your little ones for dry nights.

You may give a reward to your child for a dry night. The rewards may be his favorite toy or a trip to a place where he wants to go. Appreciate him for being dry for a night. You may tell your child, "You are a big boy or a big girl now," or "Great job!"

4. Go to the bathroom before sleeping.

There is a technique called "lifting" wherein you let your child goes to the bathroom first before going to sleep. After two or three hours of sleep, you are going to wake him again and take him to the bathroom.

5. Provide waterproof sheets.

There are mattresses that are made of plastic sheet on one side. This can ease the bedwetting of your child. You may also use plastic sheets and disposable underwear or diapers. Thus, this may cost you quite a lot.

Keeping dry at night is another milestone of children. You must encourage your child to stay dry at night always. Certainly, you and your kids will be relieved when dry nights prevail. Sleep tight!
