Why Pets Get Stressed and What To Do About It

Stress in not only common among humans but also among animals, especially pets. Loss of freedom is tagged to be the main cause why pets get stressed.

According to Times of Malta, pets like dogs and cats usually get stressed when they are hungry, thirsty, in pain or suffering from a disease. But owners can always do something to eliminate the stress of their furry friends.

"They must provide ready access to clean water and make sure the animal is getting a well-balanced diet administered in the correct amounts to maintain full health and vigour," said Malta Veterinary Association secretary Geoffrey Schembri Adami. He added that the habitat of these animals should be comfortable and with proper temperature.

Pet Doctors noted some of the most common indications of stress among pets are shaking, being clingy, running away, not eating and panting. It added that these often occur when they move from one house to another, loud noises like thunder or fireworks, there are additional members in the family like babies or other pets.

Adami added in the Times of Malta report that stress can be prevented and eliminated by consulting a veterinarian, having vaccinations and regular checkups. "Pets are not meant to live alone and so even if all other aspects of your pet's life are fully catered for, it does not mean that your job as an owner is done," he added.

In addition, Pet Doctors highlighted that plug-in devices which help make dog relax can also be plugged inside the house to help them relax. There are also YouTube playlists like this one which offers relaxing sounds for pets.

Veterinarian Pamela Fisher told Tween Tribune that music helps in calming dogs and cat. "I have used therapeutic music in my practice and wanted to figure out a way to help the shelter animals in my own community," she noted.
