Giving Dogs Bones Increases Pet's Risk of Death

If you were used to throwing your pet dog some bones for them to munch on, this story that starts to make rounds online on March 4 would make you stop doing it. Dog owners are now being warned to not give their pets bones if they want their furry little friend to live long.

In an article published by Mirror, it all started when a bullmastiff named Reba went to surgery just because she happened to have swallowed some parts of the bones given to her by her owner. Reba experienced diarrhea for almost a day and had some of those bone fragments even found in her stool.

According to Wales Online, the owners immediately took Reba to Vets4Pets Plas Coch, as soon as they noticed something wrong was happening to their dog. She went to surgery within an hour and that is when the vets found and removed all the fragments of the bones in her stomach. If her owners didn't rush her immediately to get operated, those fragments from the bones she ate could have killed her.

It was a good thing that they acted on it as fast they could, which is why they were still able to save their dog's life. Reba recovered quite fast from the surgery that she was discharged from the facility after 24 hours. It also only took him 4 days to go back to her normal condition.

May her story serve as a lesson for all dog owners out there to stop giving bones to their pets, as it is harmful and it could even kill them. Note that diarrhea is not the only thing that could kill your dog, but other complications such as gastrointestinal obstruction, wounds in the mouth and projectile vomiting could also be experienced. Make sure that you only give them toys that are safe for them and bones should no longer be on your list.
