Raw or undercooked fish, oysters and clams should be avoided to prevent infections and poisoning. Shark, swordfish, golden or white snapper and king mackerel should also be avoided because of its high mercury content. For a safe pregnancy diet, cook fish at a temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit and eat the types of fish that have lower mercury content such as salmon and trout. Safe Pregnancy Diet Tip # 2: Avoid raw or undercooked meat or poultry

Make sure to eat well-done meat or poultry to prevent poisoning and infection. Pregnant women should also avoid processed meat such as ham and sausages because of its high sodium content which can cause hypertension and diabetes. Beef, lamb and veal should be cooked at a temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit while pork, ground meat and poultry should be cooked at a temperature of 160 to 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

"Soft-boiled or raw eggs may carry salmonella bacteria," Baby Centre UK shared. "So while you're pregnant, you may want to cook eggs until both the yolk and white are solid. This destroys salmonella bacteria and makes the eggs safe to eat." Salmonella virus is unlikely to cause harm to the baby but it can cause harm to you. Diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache and fever are common symptoms of salmonella virus poisoning. Safe Pregnancy Diet Tip # 4: Beverages to avoid.

Pregnant women should never drink alcohol in order to prevent fetal alcohol syndrome as well as raw milk and freshly squeezed juice to avoid stomach upset and food poisoning. Pregnant women should also avoid drinking more than 200 mg or 12 ounces of caffeine every day. "We know from many of our studies that caffeine crosses the placenta, and a baby's developing metabolism can't quite handle the caffeine jolt," Michele Hakakha, M.D., told Parents.com.
