Women Need More Sleep than Men According to Studies

Studies reveal that women need more sleep than men. It was mentioned that women tend to suffer more side effects from lack of sleep compared to men.

According to Duke Magazine, a study revealed that women suffer greater health issues due to lack of sleep compared to men of the same age group. The study made by the researchers from Duke Medical University examined 210 men and women (both groups are middle aged). The researchers were able to come into conclusion that women who lack sleep are prone to depression, anger and psychological imbalance.

"We found that for women, poor sleep is strongly associated with high levels of psychological distress and greater feelings of hostility, depression, and anger," Edward Suarez said, an associate professor in the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and the lead author of the study. "In contrast, these feelings were not associated with the same degree of sleep disruption in men."

The study, made by the researchers from Duke University, a group of sleep experts from Britain, also came into conclusion that women need more sleep than men. The team of experts stated that sleep allows the brain to recover and repair itself from stress brought by daily activities, as per Daily Mail's report.

Professor Jim Horne, director of the Sleep Research Center at Loughborough University, published a journal "Sleepfaring: A Journey Through The Science Of Sleep" wherein it was discussed that women do need more sleep. Women in nature are over thinkers, and would tend to have an increased brain activity more than men.

"Women tend to multi-task - they do lots at once and are flexible - and so they use more of their actual brain than men do. Because of that, their sleep need is greater," Professor Horne said. "A man who has a complex job that involves a lot of decision-making and lateral thinking may also need more sleep than the average male - though probably still not as much as a woman. This is because women's brains are wired differently from men's and are more complex, so their sleep need will be slightly greater."
