Parent-Teacher Conference Tips: How To Make The Most Of Your Few Minutes With Child's Teacher

Teachers are not the only ones responsible for a child's education. Parents have a responsibility to work hand in hand with their kids' teachers in order to maximize the learning and development of their children. Therefore, a parent-teacher conference is very important to a child's development.

NPR shared some parent-teacher conference tips for parents who are concerned for their child's education. Hopefully, these tips can help parents make the most of their few minutes talking with the teachers for the future of their kids.

1. Do your homework.

Parents need to prepare before going to a parent-teacher conference. Preparations include reviewing your child's works, grades and past feedback from the teacher. Writing down all of the necessary questions for the teachers can help parents maximize the few minutes they have with their child's teacher, Colorin Colorado advises.

2. Describe your child to the teacher in detail.

"Often times we don't have any understanding of what happens when a child leaves school," says Amanda Wirene, an educator at the Montessori School of Englewood, told NPR. "Often parents are our only way to know what's going on at home."

3. Be aware of the time.

Make sure that what you talk about with the teachers is vital to your child's education and not about trivial matters. If you ran out of time during the parent-teacher conference but still has something important to talk about, it is better to schedule another appointment because the teacher has other parents to talk with.

4. Learn how your kids act, talk, socialize and learn in the classroom.

Many parents are unaware of what their kids are like in school. Sometimes, parents prefer not to know because they are afraid of what they might find out.

Instead of being afraid of the truth, parents need to encourage the teacher to be honest about the child's behavior and performance. This is one of the most important parent-teacher conference tips because it can help parents implement some changes in the house to help their kids improve at school.
