Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie End their Three-Year Marriage, Will Get Joint Custody of Son Luca

Actress-singer Hilary Duff announced separation from husband Mike Comrie after three years of marriage.

"Hilary Duff and husband Mike Comrie have mutually decided to an amicable separation," Duff's rep told E! Online. "They remain best friends and will continue to be in each other's lives. They are dedicated to loving and parenting their amazing son, and ask for privacy at this time," the rep added.

The split has come as a surprise to many as there were no signs of disagreement or separation between Hilary and Mike, "There was no major incident -- no big event between the two of them," a source close Hilary told PEOPLE magazine. "They really did drift apart. They have put effort and thought into this decision for a long time. They tried couples therapy, but in the end, they realized at this time, they work better as friends. And they really are great friends."

The source also added that that separation wasn't "a rash decision." "It's something [Hilary] thought through. She really does care about him and he really does care about her."

The 26-year-old 'Lizzie McGuire' star married 33-year-old retired professional ice hockey centre, in August 2010. The couple has one a two-year-old son, Luca.

Despite announcing their separation, the two will continue to remain friends. "They're better friends than a married couple," Hilary's mother, Susan, told TMZ. She also added that they have decided on joint custody of their child.

"Mike and I are sitting here, we are so appreciative for all of your kindness& well wishes," she  tweeted. "Not an easy day but we're getting thru it together," Hilary had tweeted, Friday.
