Elizabeth Vargas Opens Up About Her Alcohol Addiction

ABC's anchor, Elizabeth Vargas, opens up about her alcohol addiction, according to All Alabama.

The Good Morning America host is well-known for her poignant interviews and strong on-screen presence this is why her admission of being an alcoholic shocked many. "I am an alcoholic," she declared. She also shared how she would tell her seven and ten-year old children that their mother needs 'juice' before going to bed. "You know, and I thought that was hysterical. It didn't occur to me that that was a problem." In the same way, when she finally decided to get into rehab, she informed her children that she was allergic to alcohol.

"I didn't want to use the word 'disease' with them, even though that's how it's classified by the medical profession. It's too scary, you know, the connotation for them is disease is something deadly and we explained that I was going to be away to get better. And they came and visited me." Vargas also shared how exhausting it was to hide her alcoholic issues and the time she came to work completely drunk and unable to conduct an interview.

"I got out of the car I realized what am I doing? And that's when I knew I needed to get help. I dealt with that anxiety, and with the stress that the anxiety brought by starting to drink. And it slowly escalated and got worse and worse." Vargas also admitted that her husband confronted her about her addiction but it was only much later that she checked herself into rehab for alcohol abuse, according to the Huffington Post
