Kids & Furniture Safety: Anchors Can Save Children's Lives

Furniture safety has never been more important than when children are around. One feature that is becoming integral to furniture safety is the anchor. Toddlers love to explore new things, and that includes furniture that looks stable, but could just fall over them.

Parenting cites the Ikea website in stating that a child dies in the US every two weeks because of accidents involving furniture and appliances. Among the more frequent scenarios pointed out are these furnitures and appliances, especially TV, falling on an unwary child. Most of these accidents were preventable, had anchors or wall attachments been used to secure the furnitures and appliances.

As a safety measure, Ikea has taken to informing customers on the importance making their furnitures child-proof. Ikea also put together a safety campaign called "Secure It," which specifically targets getting their consumers to use wall attachments and similar security features.

"Efforts have included sending emails to millions of customers; paid advertisements in parent magazines; posting notices on the IKEA website, Facebook and Twitter postings; paid Internet searches; and videos posted online about the importance of wall-attachment," the company stated. With growing concern, IKEA has become more active in spreading awareness.

Huffington Post reports that the Ikea recently took a hit with three deaths resulting from accidents involving the company's Malm dresser line. The separate incidents prompted Ikea to renew their efforts at educating and informing families on how to reinforce safety in their homes.

Cases of accidents of this nature has become more prevalent as furnitures and appliances manufactured in recent times tend to be space and cost-efficient. This sometimes translates to portability and use of light materials in certain cases.

However, although these items are lighter compared to earlier generations, they are still heavy enough to cause damage especially to children. Still, to an active and curious child, safety is the best policy for all furniture and appliance brands or makes.
