Prostate Cancer: Men Who Don't Ejaculate Often May Be Up For Higher Risk

The frequency of a guy's ejaculation can determine his health, newly released data suggests. Researchers have found that the frequency of ejaculation may be inversely proportional to the risk for prostate cancer.

The study, which was published in European Urology last month, involved 31, 925 guys. They answered questions regarding the frequency of their ejaculation on a 1992 questionnaire, which was followed through to 2010.

Measuring Men's Ejaculations

The guys' average monthly ejaculation frequency was assessed when they were at ages 20-29, 40-49 and the year before the questionnaire was distributed. Results show that 3, 839 of the subjects were diagnosed with prostate cancer during the study period.

The men who ejaculated for at least 21 times a month when they were 20-29 were found to be 19 percent less likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer compared to the guys who ejaculated for just seven times monthly, Huffington Post reported. Meanwhile, the guys who had more ejaculations when they were 40-49 were 22 percent less likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Reducing Risks

"While our findings should be confirmed in studies that evaluate the potential biological mechanisms underlying the observed associations," Boston University affiliate and lead author Jennifer Rider said in an e-mail to Huffington Post. "The results of our study suggest that ejaculation and safe sexual activity throughout adulthood could be a beneficial strategy for reducing the risk of prostate cancer."

Process And Problems With Ejaculation

During ejaculation, a guy's muscles' contract while his sperm and semen mix. The mixture is pushed into the urethra and spurt out in the tip of his penis. The semen that comes out of the penis during ejaculation amounts to about a teaspoon, according to the Palo Alto Medical Foundation.

WebMD said that there are three general problems regarding ejaculation. These are premature ejaculation, delayed ejaculation and retrograde ejaculation.
