Parenting Facts: Most Parents Are Struggling With Smartphone Addiction Too

Almost half of the teenage population openly admitted to smartphone addiction. Though smartphone addiction may be considered normal among teenagers, studies emerged that their parents are just as addicted as well.

Smartphone addiction is often associated with teens as the teenage generation are more knowledgeable when it comes to social media and the recent gadgets. What needs to be considered however the fact that most parents struggle with cell phone addiction as well is.

David Greenfield, a psychiatrist who founded Center for Internet and Technology Addiction pointed out that the society today can easily be lured with smartphone usage as per The Christian Science. Greenfield pointed out that people seldom realize that their everyday lives are being shaped by smartphones.

"What people don't realize is that their smartphone is shaping them, it's conditioning them," Greenfield stated. "As a culture we have crossed the tipping point of overusing the technology."

According to CNN, Holland Haiis, a digital detox therapist then cited that smartphone or technological addiction can happen to everyone. This being said, parents are not excepted by the gadget craze.

"Technological addiction can happen to anyone," said Haiis. "If your teens would prefer gaming indoors, alone, as opposed to going out to the movies, meeting friends for burgers or any of the other ways that teens build camaraderie, you may have a problem."

The study published in Pediatrics entitled "Patterns of Mobile Device Use by Caregivers and Children During Meals in Fast Food Restaurants" mentioned that parents that are hooked on to their smartphones have poor relationship with their kids. The studies reveal the lurking danger of a weak bond between the parent and the child due to excessive smartphone usage. Researchers came into conclusion that parents that are glued to their smartphones are more irritable n responding to their child during a meal time conversation.
