Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg Pens Poignant Mother’s Day Message To Single Moms, Urges To Recognize The Struggles Of Single Parents

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg is celebrating Mother's Day as a single mom for the first time. Hence, the 46-year-old mom-of-two penned a poignant Mother's Day message on Facebook, which detailed the challenges she faced as a single mom.

Sheryl Sandberg's Mother's Day Message

A year after the untimely death of Sheryl Sandberg's husband Dave Goldberg on May 1, 2015, she is sharing her own experiences as a single parent to the world. According to People, Sandberg is also calling for action to recognize and address the challenges faced by many single mothers in the United States.

"People become single parents for many reasons: loss of a partner, breakdown of a relationship, by choice," Sandberg wrote on Facebook. "One year and five days ago I joined them. For me, this is still a new and unfamiliar world.... I will never experience and understand all of the challenges most single moms face, but I understand a lot more than I did a year ago."

In her lengthy post, Sheryl Sandberg also acknowledged how fortunate she is for not facing the financial encumbrances of many single parents and widows. However, it didn't stop her to urge public and corporate workplaces to expand their definition of family and to create communities to support single parents, Business Insider notes.

Sheryl Sandberg's Husband

Sheryl Sandberg's husband, Dave Goldberg, was the former CEO of SurveyMonkey. Unfortunately, he died unexpectedly of head trauma after a fall on a treadmill on May 1, 2015, Time reports.

Prior to Goldberg's death, Sheryl Sandberg always credited her husband for providing the support that was necessary for her to succeed in the tech world, both personally and professionally. But now, Sandberg was sharing her grieving process and moving on following last year's life-changing loss.

US President Barack Obama's Mother's Day Message

In celebration of motherhood, U.S. President Barack Obama also joined Sheryl Sandberg in giving out his own Mother's Day message. In his 2016 Mother's Day proclamation, Obama included the transgender moms in his announcement.

"On Mother's Day, we celebrate those who are first to welcome us into the world," Obama said, as per WND. "Regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status, mothers have always moved our nation forward and remained steadfast in their pursuit of a better and brighter future for their children."
