Bronx man fatally shot after defending mom's singing

A man from the Bronx was fatally shot after defending his mother's singing to a group of hecklers, according to reports.

Tony Burgess, 24, was shot directly in the head and pronounced dead on arrival at Lincoln Hospital after an assailant sneaked into his home at a Melrose apartment building.

Before the shooting, Burgess and his brother were both involved in a fight against a group of young men who had laughed at their mother Verbena Burgess' singing Sunday night.

The New York Post reported that the prosecutors went as far as to throw a bottle and paper at the 50-year-old woman.

Verbena confirmed the story and said that she was outside her home belting out Chris Brown's "Take You Down" when several men from across the street from the Morris Avenue apartment building where she's staying asked her to keep it down.

"The boys threw a bottle at me for singing. I said to him, 'Why did you throw the bottle at me?' He said, 'Shut the f**k up.' Then he got a piece of paper and threw it at me. I said, 'I'm going to call 911 because you're bothering me,'" Verbena told the New York Post.

A neighbor told the New York Daily News: "She was singing. They came from across the street and started telling her, 'Shut up, shut up.' She said, 'I'll call the cops, or I'm going to ring the bell and get my sons.' They told her, 'Do it. Call the cops. Call your boys.'"

Burgess and his brother brawled with the group then went home. Later on, the group forced their way into the Burgess' home. Another neighbor told the paper: "They got in and shot the boy."

Police officials are still looking for the group involved in the incident. No arrests have been made and an investigation is currently on going.
