19 students, 1 adult injured in Pittsburg high school stabbing

Some 19 students and 1 adult were injured Wednesday morning in a Pittsburg high school stabbing, officials say. A 10th grade male student has been taken into custody.

The bloodbath took place at Franklin Regional High School in the suburb of Murrysville just after the school opened.

The severity of the victims' injuries is unclear at this time, but there is word that four victims are in serious condition, according to The Associated Press. Doctors at Forbes Regional Hospital report that seven students have life-threatening injuries.

"These are quite serious injuries," Dr. Chris Kaufman, trauma director at Forbes Regional Medical Center, told NBC News. "These are not superficial in nature."

The victims range in age from 15 to 60 years old.

Not all of the victims were injured from stab wounds, Westmoreland County emergency management spokesman Dan Stevens said. Some suffered scrapes and cuts in the mayhem that ensued.

Despite the life-threatening injuries, including stab wounds to the abdomen, back or torso, all are expected to survive. At least two students are currently undergoing surgery, while others are receiving CT scans and X-rays and could require surgery later. One male student with a stab wound to the arm has already posted a selfie from the local hospital.

According to reports, the suspect brought a knife into school and hit multiple classrooms and hallways.

"I was walking into the school and a stampede of people were running after me," said a student who witnessed the stabbing. "They were screaming, 'Go to your cars! Go to your cars! Someone is stabbing people!'"

The first call for help from the school came at 7:13 a.m. The situation was under control by 7:30 to 7:40, Stevens said.

The school released an emergency bulletin on its website that read: "A critical incident has occurred at the high school. All elementary schools are canceled, the middle school and high school students are secure."

There are unconfirmed allegations that social media bullying was involved, but officials are unsure if the attack was premeditated.
