Save The Ocean: Edible Six-Pack Rings By Saltwater Brewery May Save Marine Life

A craft beer company has thought of a brilliant idea to save marine life. Saltwater Brewery created edible six-pack rings that could be eaten by animal life if they end up in the ocean.

The Threat To Marine Life

According to Discovery News, between 400,000 and 110,000 metric tons of plastic from America end up in the ocean as revealed by a study in" Science" last year. While most of the plastic waste comes from coastal areas, some of it ends up in the ocean through inland waterways.

The Weather Network cited another study done in 2014 that suggests more than five trillion pieces of plastic, which can result to 269,000 tonnes in weight, end up in the ocean.  The six-pack rings particularly can pose a great threat to fish and animals as they can get trapped in them.

In response, Saltwater Brewery patterned with an ad agency "We Believers," has come up with a sustainable solution to help preserve wildlife in the ocean and help eliminate some of the plastic that ends up in the world's waterways. The partnership has produced the first ever fully edible six-pack rings.

The Edible Rings

According to Huffington Post, the edible rings crafted by Saltwater Brewery in Delray Beach, Florida, are made from beer by-products during the brewing process. This means that the edible rings are made of mostly barley and wheat, which are completely safe for humans and fish.

More so, the edible rings are also 100 percent biodegradable and compostable, which make it more remarkable. The edible rings are found to be as durable as their plastic counterparts.

Help Save Marine Life

However, the cost of making the edible six-pack rings is a lot more compared to the plastic packaging according to Saltwater Brewery. They hope that consumers are willing to pay extra to help save the environment, though.

Saltwater is also encouraging other breweries to join the cause so prices can go down. If more companies invest in this kind of technology, then production cost will go down. In turn, edible rings may compete with the plastic ones, saving more marine lives in the process.
