It will be a long weekend for the Americans as Memorial Day approaches. It's a perfect time for partying, playing and remembering the deadliest war in the country. So, before you heed to your Memorial Day activities, take the time to understand the importance of the event.

Facts About Memorial Day

According to USA Today, Memorial Day was celebrated on May 30 for decades, but this changed in 1971 when the Congress established Memorial Day to be the last Monday in May. The event honors the military personnel who died during the Civil War. About 620,000 men died in the said war, making it the deadliest war in the country's history.

Per the report, of the casualties the Union lost almost 365,000 troops while the Confederacy about 260, 000. However, more than half of the deaths were due to disease.

Per History, US host Memorial Day parades annually. Americans also observe the event by visiting cemeteries and memorials. Others throw parties and barbecues because this also marks the beginning of summer.

3 Things To Do In Memorial Day Weekend

If you still don't know what to do during the Memorial Day weekend, here are some activities for you per the Washington Post.

1. Watch The National Memorial Day Parade - On Monday, there will be a National Memorial Day Parade on Constitution Avenue. The parade will feature the soldiers, veterans, local organizations and marching bands. It will also include musical performances from John Michael Montgomery, "American Idol" winner Trent Harmon and more.

2. Attend National Memorial Day Concert - Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise will be hosting the annual event on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol on Sunday. The concert is free and there you can party with Trace Adkins, former "American Idol" contestant Katharine McPhee, Trent Harmon and more. It will also feature the National Symphony Orchestra and the Beach Boys.

3. Attend Steve Aoki's BBQ at Soundcheck - If you want to begin your summer with a barbecue party with dancing, the international DJ and producer, DJ Steve Aoki will be spinning for you and the rest of the guests while you enjoy your barbecue. You better get there early because the first 150 guests will get sliders, mac and cheese and hush puppies. Doors open at 4 p.m. Admission is $30.
