Why Does This Toddler Love To Hug His Diapers' Packaging?

One toddler in Florida loves to hug not his parents, not pillows but a package of his diapers. The packaging shows an African-American boy like him, prompting the one-year-old toddler to think he himself is the one in the packaging.

"Ben thinks this is him and won't let go of the diapers," Ben's mother, Rose Bennett of Florida tweeted, along with photos of Ben hugging the package of Parent's Choice diapers. As of this writing, the post has been retweeted more than 12,000 times and liked by more than 23,000 Twitter users.

Different Diaper Size, Different Packaging

According to a report from The Huffington Post, Bennet ran out of Ben’s diapers and went to a supermarket to buy new ones. The supermarket did not have size four Parent’s Choice diapers, which Ben usually wears, so she bought size five Parent’s Choice diapers instead.

The size five diaper’s packaging had a different baby image on it. As she changed Ben’s diaper, Ben reportedly looked at the baby on the diaper’s package and said “Ben.” While Bennet told her son that the baby on the diaper’s package wasn’t him, the toddler still went around dragging the diaper package and hugging it.

Representation In Diapers, Access To Diapers

"Representation really does matter in the media and in packaging for children apparently," Bennet said, as per ABC News. Bennet added that her toddler cares for the image of the child that is shown in the diapers’ packaging.

Meanwhile, a proposed bill regarding diaper access has been filed at the United States Senate. According to EIN News, the Hygiene Assistance for Families of Infants and Toddlers Act would provide grant funds for programs regarding access to clean diapers. It is geared towards low-income families.
