Samsung Galaxy Note 7 & Note 5: Comparing Devices As Galaxy Note 7 Launches August 2 [Differences, Design, Specs, Features]

Samsung Galaxy Note 7's launch is reportedly drawing near. Numerous sources say that the tech company is going to make an announcement about the device on Aug. 2 at the Samsung Unpacked event.

The smartphone and tablet are expected to carry notable upgrades from its last release, the Galaxy Note 5. But what are its differences in design, features and specs? Should consumers spring for the latest Samsung Galaxy Note?

It should be noted that there is no Samsung Galaxy Note 6. The Korean tech company decided to skip naming its upcoming phablet as such in order to synchronize this with its other smartphone, the Galaxy S series, per The Verge. The latter has released its S7 and S7 Edge models in March 2016.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 & Note 5: Comparing Designs

Samsung Galaxy Note 5, which arrived on store shelves Aug. 2015, was designed to closely follow the Galaxy S6 series. This device's size is at 153.2 x 76.2 x 7.6mm.

Now, based on the leaks of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 blueprint, it looks like the new phablet is going to be bigger than the Note 5 at 153.5mm x 73.9mm x 7.9mm, per Tech Buffalo. The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is also rumored to have IP68 Water Resistance. This means that the smartphone should be able to withstand being in the water for at least 30 minutes without causing any defects, per Forbes.

The Galaxy Note 5 was designed with a fingerprint scanner, but the Galaxy Note 7 will take this up a notch with the rumored iris (eye) scanner. Mashable reports that the new smartphone will also take cues from the Galaxy 7 Edge's design with a curved glass panel that stretches from side to side.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 & Note 5: Comparing Specs

The Galaxy Note 5 has a Gorilla Glass 4-protected Super AMOLED screen display that measures 5.7 inches. Its pixel resolution is at 2560 x 1440. The Galaxy Note 7 will retain similar specs, but there are conflicting reports that the screen size could either be 5.7 or 5.8 inches.

The Galaxy Note 5's hardware runs on an Exynos processor with 4GB RAM for both its models -- the 32GB and 64GB. Its battery power is at 3000 mAh. On the other hand, the Galaxy Note 7's hardware could either be featured with an Exynos or a Qualcomm chipset, with an increase to 6GB to 8GB RAM. It will also reportedly have 64GB, 128GB and 256GB models. Its battery power will be highest at 3600 mAh, per Phone Arena.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 & Note 5: Comparing Features

The Galaxy Note 7 is expected to be featured with the Android N (Android Nougat), the latest Android operating system. It might also have Samsung's TouchWiz software, which is already in the Galaxy Note 5.

The camera for the Galaxy Note 7 is expected to be at 12-megapixels with f/1.7 aperture, which should be great for taking photos in low light conditions. The Galaxy Note 5 has a higher resolution at 16-megapixel, however it has f/1.9 making low light settings a bit more difficult to shoot.
