Many "Scandal" season 6 fans recently got the shocked of their lives when "Good Morning America" reported that ABC's hit political thriller series will be signing off after its sixth season. Fortunately, the report was just a mix-up as host Lara Spencer corrected the news following creator Shonda Rhimes' Twitter post.

"Good Morning America" co-anchor Lara Spencer shocked Gladiator fans on Wednesday, Jul. 27, when she announced that "Scandal" season 6 will be the series' final season. But it was not just the fans who were surprised because "Scandal" creator Shonda Rhimes called the show's attention on social media, denying the report.

"A little bittersweet, however, because it has been said that this is also going to be the final season. I'm afraid to say it... Shonda Rhimes, she said, yeah," Spencer said during her Pop News segment on the show, Celeb Dirty Laundry quoted. "And it is tremendous, so enjoy every minute of it."

Rhimes, who was so surprised that the news even made her "spit out her coffee," took to Twitter to deny the reports about "Scandal" season 6 cancellation. In her tweet, Rhimes stressed that "Scandal" season 6 is not the show's final installment.

Following Rhimes' tweet, Spencer immediately corrected her report. She also apologized on air for the mix-up about her announcement that "Scandal" season 6 was the show's finale and mentioned Rhimes in a tweet.

"We said that this was the last season of Scandal," Spencer said, as per People. "Shonda has weighed in, she just tweeted, and she said we made her spit out her coffee. My apologies. She said she has an ending in mind, but that ending is not happening this next season... So, correction: Ending in mind, but when that ending is happening we don't know..."

After the recent "Scandal" season 6 mix-up, the cast and creators of the series shared some photos and videos on social media regarding their sixth season comeback. According to Entertainment Weekly, the table reads for the series started on Monday and "Scandal" stars Kerry Washington, Darby Stanchfield, Bellamy Young, Katie Lowes, Cornelius Smith Jr., Scott Foley, Merri Howard and Shonda Rhimes have tweeted some photos about the event.

During the series' first table read, Bellamy Young teased "Scandal" fans about an "unbelievable" season will be expected next year, iDigitalTimes revealed.

In addition, rumors have it that Olivia and Fitz will be getting married in "Scandal" season 6. In fact, Movie News Guide claimed that actor Tony Goldwyn (Fitz Grant) hinted that Liv (Washington) still got a chance to settle down in the upcoming season but actor Scott Foley (Jake) shutdown the claims, saying Liv already made a choice and chose him.

"Scandal" season 6 air date is set to premiere midseason 2017 on ABC but filming starts this July. As Parent Herald previously reported, the series will remain at its 9 p.m. timeslot every Thursdays but starting this Sept. 22, the said timeslot will be occupied by ABC's newest series, "Notorious."
