‘Castle’ Spinoff To Feature Stana Katic: ABC President Explains Season 8 Cancellation

"Castle" Season 8 finale capped off the entire Castle-Beckett story with quite a disappointing ending. Many fans slammed the show's writers and crew for creating an ending that did not seem to give the show justice.

Back then, many argued that the reason for this kind of disappointing ending was Stana Katic's sudden departure from "Castle" Season 8. However, ABC President Channing Dungey recently shared during the Television Critics Association that the show was not cancelled because of Katic, reports Entertainment Weekly.

"We were always very up-front with the studio and the producers about the possibility that we might not be bringing the show back for season 9," he explained. "But the studio has to do what they need to do in order to prepare for the possibility of season 9."

Dungey justified that "Castle" Season 8 ended simply because the network no longer thought it had any more reasons to continue on air. Many fans, however, refuse to believe his statements and remain insistent that it was Katic's departure that prompted the cancellation.

TVLine also notes that the alternate ending to "Castle" Season 8 finale was not included in the final season DVD. This alternate ending would have aired on TV if ABC decided to renew the show for season 9.

This led to speculations that a "Castle" spinoff series may be in the works. Since Stana Katic's role was well-loved amongst fans and viewers of the show, many have been hoping that the spinoff would focus on Detective Kate Beckett instead.
