Parenting Facts: Do Fathers Have A Great Impact On Their Children's Development? Experts Suggest: Not Much

Fathers are often discredited when it comes to their children's growth and development. Though mothers are linked to the emotional growth of their children, it is supposed that fathers play an important role as well.

Psychologists and child care professionals previously mentioned that fathers do not have much impact on the child's development compared to mothers. It was also discussed that only a few data goes to show that fathers create a significant impact on a child's development.

Contrary to previous claims however, the Psychology Today mentioned that a father's role in a child's life creates a huge impact, most especially on the child's mental state. Paul Raeburn, a science journalist who had previously claimed that a father's role does not have much impact, stated that a father's involvement creates positive improvement on the child.

Reaburn, who has five children, reiterated that despite the fact that the study on father-child relationship has yet to flourish into a solid state; his involvement with his own kids provides a positive impact on their growth. He then added that his presence and involvement with his children promotes a positive impact on their family.

"When we bother to look for the father's impact, we find it--always," Kyle Pruett, Yale psychiatrist and fatherhood research pioneer told Raeburn as per the Psychology Today. "Ignoring dads produced a field of research with staggering blind spots."

There are several researchers who highlights the impact of fathers to their growing child as cited by the Psychology Today. Another report  by the Parent Herald then mentioned that teenagers who grew up in the presence of their fathers are less likely to indulge in addiction and alcohol consumption.

"Early behaviour shows if the child is at increased risk for social and anti-social problems, substance abuse problems, anxiety and depression, interpersonal problems of domestic violence as well as health issues coming from heart disease and smoking," Professor Mark Dads stated.
