How Miss New York Won Miss America With Her Comments About Trump

Being asked about the politics surely put the contestants of Miss America 2017 under additional pressure during the Q&A portion, it being a hot topic as the elections is fast approaching. The girls were able to answer well, but the answers of those on the top are the ones that stood out. Miss New York's comments about the presidentiable Donald Trump landed her on the second-runner up spot out of the 52 contestants.

Miss New York Camille Sims answered a blunt political question about what he thinks of Donald Trump, an undeniably colorful character in the United States. The 23-year-old responded: "I think that he's a bright reminder of how our country needs to come together. If you don't agree with his message, then it's time to decide where you stand in this debate."

Trump has been a rather controversial presidential candidate, to the point that some Americans say they would have to migrate to other countries if he wins. But while Sims' comments seem to diss the real estate tycoon, her next statement made the difference. "As Americans, we need to make sure that we come together," she continued. "Represent what it means to be American, which is celebrating all people from all backgrounds, whether you're an immigrant, or a Native American, or an African American, or an Asian American." Her subtle throwing of shade at the billionaire yet eloquent answer contributed to her making it to the top three, per News.com.au.

Meanwhile, the crown winter Savvy Shields was asked about Hilary Clinton. She said that being a leader of a free world, you have to be watchful of your actions because everything you do and say matters. Your words and actions "are held to a higher standard." Shields, who succeeded Miss America Betty Cantrell, expounded on her answer when she spoke to the media. She said that she hopes both Clinton and Trump would focus on compromise.
