‘Final Fantasy XV’ Latest Update & News: Square Enix Releasing In-Universe ‘King’s Knight’ As Tie-In Mobile Game

The long awaited next installment in Square Enix's hugely popular "Final Fantasy" series, "Final Fantasy XV," is about to get another tie-in video game coming to the mobile device platform in "King's Knight: Wrath of the Dark Dragon."

Square Enix announced the game on the official "Final Fantasy XV" website, as reported by Kotaku. Much in the vein of the "Justice Monsters Five" pinball game, "King's Knight: Wrath of the Dark Dragon" will release to mobile devices on both the iOS and Android.

Another similarity between "Justice Monsters Five" and "King's Knight: Wrath of the Dark Dragon" is the fact that both games actually exist as mobile games within the universe of "Final Fantasy XV." It has been reported that players will be able to play mini-games using the main character's phone, with "Justice Monsters Five" being one of those mini-games.

In the case of "King's Knight: Wrath of the Dark Dragon" however, Square Enix will take a reversed approach of sorts in that it is a real-life game coming later into "Final Fantasy XV" as DLC instead of the other way around. Even more, "King's Knight: Wrath of the Dark Dragon" is actually an homage to the original side-scrolling shooter "King's Knight" that released back in 1986 to the SNES.

The original "King's Knight" that was released on Sept. 18, 1986, making the announcement of the "Final Fantasy XV" tie-in game a 30th-anniversary homage. The original told the story of Ray Jack, the titular knight, who went on a quest to save Princess Claire from an evil dragon; along with him were the wizard Kaliva, the monster Barusa, and the thief Toby.

It is unknown how deep the connection between the original and "King's Knight: Wrath of the Dark Dragon" will be, though the new game will apparently star the same characters. Pre-registrations for the "Final Fantasy XV" tie-in game are now available on PreLaunch, for both the iOS and Android.
